Highsmith Joins Rare Company, WJU Eases Past Carlow

WHEELING, W.Va. – Former Cardinals great Shawn Straughn has some company tonight. Haywood Highsmith joined the rare company of 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds in his career tonight as he led Wheeling Jesuit eased past Carlow University, 101-60, in men's basketball team.

With his 3-pointer with 5:02 left in the first half for his seventh point, Highsmith became the eighth WJU (9-2) player to reach 1,500 career points. Haywood snatched his 1,000th rebound on a missed Carlow (1-10) free throw with 2:35 left in the opening half. The senior Baltimore, Md., native joins Straughn, who had 1,920 points and 1,110 rebounds, as the only two WJU men's basketball players to reach the two plateaus.

"For Haywood to reach those two levels, it says what kind of player he is. Haywood reaching 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds with over half of the season left tells a lot," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "He has been such a big part of the program (these past now four seasons). I feel blessed to have coach him and see him grow as a person."

In the Tuesday night game leading 23-20, Highsmith helped the Cardinals take full control when he found Ryan Cooper inside to start a 10-0 run and 35-5 score final eight first-half minutes. WJU added the the first seven points of the second 20 minutes started by a Preston Boswell steal and Brent Pegram layin for the 60-25 score.

"We did a good job moving the ball and scoring the basketball and our defense was solid. We had no let down after the West Virginia game and we did what we needed to do tonight," said Sancomb.

Along with his two milestones, Highsmith stayed perfect on the season with his NCAA Division II-leading, double-double of 19 points on 6 of 12 shooting and 12 rebounds. He added five assists, three steals and a block.

Jeremiah Wilson posted his own double-double of 13 tallies and 13 boards. Boswell chipped in 16 points, four assists and five steals. Cooper had a season-best 15 points to go with seven caroms. Pegram rounded out the home numbers with nine points and seven assists.

WJU forced Carlow into 21 turnovers and dominated the glass, 51-36.

Carlow's Charlie Scharbo scored 15 points.

WJU will now be off until the New Year. The Cardinals then return to Mountain East Conference play on Thursday, Jan. 4, at the University of Charleston in a 7:30 p.m. contest.
