Dragons Bite Cardinals, End Home Run

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the first time in over five years, the Cardinals did not come out on the winning side on the McDonough Center volleyball court. After a tied match, Tiffin outlasted Wheeling Jesuit in the third set, 32-30, and rode the momentum into the fourth set for the 3-1 upset.

The Dragons (19-12) started strong and opened a six-point lead, 16-10, and then polished off the first set with the final six points for a 25-14 win. The Cardinals (26-5) turned a 13-13 into an advantage with five points in a row, before Maddy Smyth pounded the game-winner for the 25-19 final.

WJU went out to an eight-point advantage three times in the third set with the last at 18-10. Tiffin responded with a 10-2 run to tie it, 20-20. It was the first of 10 ties in an intense set, which the Dragons proved to be the team with two-straight points in them at 32-30. The visitors trailed only twice early in the fourth set by a single points and maintained the advantage the rest of the set after going ahead 11-8 of the eventual 25-16 final.

The WJU loss was its first home loss in 108 matches dating back to Oct. 2, 2012 against California (Pa.). The defeat also ended the Cardinals current 23-match win streak since their first match on Sept. 9 against nationally-ranked Winona State.
