Cardinals Volleyball Claims 5th-Straight MEC Regular Season Title, Sweeps Cavs


WISE, Va. – For the fifth year in a row, the Cardinals are the Mountain East Conference Regular Season champions. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team swept past The University of Virginia's College at Wise, 3-0, Saturday afternoon to claim the crown.
 
Behind an impressive .442 hitting performance, the No. 21 Cardinals (26-4) eased past the Cavalivers (6-22/2-12 MEC) by final scores of 25-11, 25-11 and 25-13.
 
WJU sits at 14-0 and holds a four-game advantage over the four second-place teams of Fairmont State, Shepherd, Urbana and Charleston with two MEC games left in the regular season. The Cardinals will now be the host for the fifth-straight time of the MEC Tournament to be held from Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 16-18.
 
The Cardinals registered a .442 team attack percentage with 48 kills against six errors in 95 total attacks. The visitors had set percentages of .412, .387 and .533 in the match.
 
Haley Kramer pounded 13 kills with only one error in 19 attacks for a .632 percentage. Cassie Meyer added 11 kills, seven digs and a pair of aces. Maddy Smyth contributed nine kills at a .421 clip and four blocks. Kenzie Schroer hit five kill with a .714 percent.
 
Stephanie Sylvester handed out 38 assists to go with 10 digs and three kills for another double-double. Emily Reedy lined two aces and dug three attacks. Audrey Francis had 15 digs. Makenna Babb's eight digs and three kills and Aleah Stauffer's two kills rounded out the WJU performers.
 
In the first set leading 8-7, WJU took control. The Cardinals scored the next two points and nine of the next 10 for a 17-8 advantage. Ahead 18-10, the visitors completed the opening set win with a 7-1 run behind three Meyer and two Kramer kills for the 25-11 tally.
 
WJU made three runs in the second set of the 25-11 total to make the difference. Down 3-2, the Cards scored seven of the next eight points for a 9-4 lead. Leading 13-9, WJU netted eight-straight tallies, before it put the last four points on the scoreboard.
 
Behind Kramer's five kills and a block, WJU built a 13-7 third set lead. UVa-Wise came to within six, 16-10, but WJU outscored the host 9-3 in the final dozen points to end the match.

UVa-Wise's Ciara Kain hit 10 kills and dug 10 WJU attacks for the top home player.
 
WJU hosts its final regular season home match on Tuesday night. The Cardinals entertain the Dragons of Tiffin University in a 7 p.m. contest.
