Cardinals Prevail Past Rams, Advance in Region Quarterfinals

WHEELING, W.Va. – Capping off the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Quarterfinals, Wheeling Jesuit prevailed past Winston-Salem State, 3-0, Thursday night.
 
The top-seeded Cardinals (32-5) held off a hard-charging eighth-seed Rams (22-8) team by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-12.
 
WJU advances to the Region Semifinals on Friday night against No. 4 seed Indiana (Pa.), which swept No. 5 West Chester by a 3-0 final, in a 7:30 p.m. match. In the first two Quarterfinals, No. 3 Pitt-Johnstown advanced past No. 6 Seton Hill, 3-0, and will play No. 2 Gannon, which held off No. 7 Shippensburg by a 3-1 margin, in the 5 p.m. contest in WJU's McDonough Center.
 
Haley Kramer led the home attack to a tune of 15 kills with two errors in 23 attacks (.565) as the Cardinals hit .342 as a team. Maddy Smyth added 10 kills and a pair of blocks, while Aleah Stauffer and Kenzie Schroer both chipped in seven kills apiece.
 
Stephanie Sylvester handed out 44 set assists and 11 digs, and she had two of a WJU season-high seven service aces. Audrey Francis and Makenna Babb recorded 17 and 11 digs on the defense.
 
Sydney Holland and Jasmine Smith lined seven kills each for the Rams.
