Cardinals March Past Crimson Hawks, Move to Region Final

WHEELING, W.Va.
 – For the seventh year in a row, the Cardinals will be in the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championship match! Wheeling Jesuit marched past a tough Indiana (Pa.) Saturday night, 3-0, with three strong finishes to sets.
 
In three competitive sets, the Cardinals (33-5) netted nine of the last 12 opening set points for a 25-19 win. WJU followed by scoring the final five points of set 2 for an identical 25-19 final. IUP led set 3 late, 21-20, but saw WJU produce the next five points to end the match, 25-21.
 
WJU moves on for what will be a rematch of the 2015 Atlantic Region final against Gannon University (30-6). The Lady Knights hit past the Mountain Cats of Pitt-Johnstown, 3-1, in the night's opening semifinal. WJU and Gannon meet in a 7 p.m. match in the McDonough Center.

WJU won the 2015 title match by a 3-0 final on Dec. 5, 2015. The two teams have no met in the 2017 season.
 
Senior Maddy Smyth was on fire with 18 kills at a .552 hit percentage and five block assists. Cassie Meyer downed 13 kills to go with 10 digs and three blocks.
 
Makenna Babb chipped in nine kills and 17 digs. Stephanie Sylvester handed out 41 assists and dug nine attacks. Audrey Francis paced the home defense with 19 digs.
 
The Cardinals held the Crimson Hawks to a .094 team hitting percentage.
 
IUP received 11 kills and 15 digs from Natalie Cignetti in the match.
