Cardinals Clinch Share of MEC Title, Tame Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – On the longest Mountain East Conference road trip of the season, the Cardinals clinched at least a tie for regular season title Friday night. Wheeling Jesuit tamed Concord in straight sets, 3-0.

The No. 21 Cardinals (25-4/13-0) used consistent runs throughout the match for separation and sets of 25-12, 25-12 and 25-15 over the Mountain Lions (12-18/6-7 MEC).

WJU started the night with two five-point spurts to break open the first set for the 13-point win. In set two, Concord led early 3-2 only to see WJU rattle off eight points in a row and later net the final six points of the set for the identical 13-point victory.

Concord led the third set 9-4 after it put up four points in a row. WJU, then, made its move with three points and then at 10-7, it recorded nine tallies in a row and went ahead 16-10. The Cardinals ended the match with six of the final seven points, including a trio of kills from Haley Kramer.

With the win, WJU earns at least a share of its fifth-straight MEC Regular Season crown. The Cardinals are now head of both Fairmont State and Urbana by three games with three league matches remaining. WJU can clinch the title outright with a Saturday win at UVa.-Wise.

Individually, Cassie Meyer had her best hitting performance of the season with a .424 percentage with 17 kills to go with 10 digs. Kramer hit .406 herself with 15 kills and five blocks.

Maddy Smyth added six kills with a pair of blocks. Both Makenna Babb and Abby Strait chipped in five kills apiece. Babb dug 12 attacks and Strait was in on two blocks.

Stephanie Sylvester dished out 44 assists to go with nine digs, two blocks and a kill. Audrey Francis dug 12 Concord attacks.

As a team, WJU posted an impressive .402 team hitting percentage with 51 kills in 102 attempts.

Concord's Emily Ellis downed nine kills and helped with three blocks.

WJU completes its weekend road swing with a 2 p.m. match at UVa.-Wise.
