Cardinals Strong Finish Helps Power Past Falcons

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – After a hard-charging home comeback, the Cardinals responded with the game-deciding finish of their own Wednesday night. Wheeling Jesuit went on a decisive 10-0 run and amounted a 24-8 finish over the final 6:49 to power past Notre Dame College, 91-80, in Mountain East Conference men's basketball action.

Following a 19-point lead in the first part of the second half, WJU (6-0/3-0 MEC) saw its advantage dwindle until Notre Dame College (3-4/1-2 MEC) caught it and went into a five-point lead, 72-67. From that point, the Cardinals flexed their muscles with a 10-0 run capped by a Haywood Highsmith three-point play to rush back ahead, 77-72. The visitors continued the strong finish and pushed the lead back to double figures until the 11-point final difference.

"Good team win. Haywood (Highsmith) and Jeremiah (Wilson) did a nice job scoring the ball and rebounding it. Preston (Boswell) played well offensively and Pat (Moseh) played well down the stretch," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Drake (Goddard) did a nice job defensively, but we need to be better defending the 3-pointers."

Highsmith continued his torrid early start of the season as he netted a season-high 29 points, but it was Boswell, who jump started the team through the first half. The sophomore produced a career-best 29 points, including 6 of 8 from 3-point land and 8 of 14 overall. Both Highsmith and Boswell went 7 for 7 from the foul line. Highsmith finished with his sixth double-double as he grabbed 16 rebounds to go with four assists and two steals.

Wilson helped inside with a solid 18-point night on 7 of 10 shooting and pulled down five boards. Moseh added 13 points, nine caroms and two assists.

Levi Frankland dropped 22 points for Notre Dame College's effort.

In the first half tied at 28, WJU went on a 12-2 run with 6 for 6 from the foul line, before Boswell hit a trey with 56 seconds left for a 40-30 intermission tally.

WJU returns home in a special 2 p.m. Saturday afternoon contest against Urbana University.
