Glenville State Uses Long-Range Answer, Pulls Away from WJU

WHEELING, W.Va. – A lightning quick Cardinals start proved to not be enough Monday night. Glenville State used the long-range, 3-point answer for every Wheeling Jesuit charge and pulled away for the 103-80 women's basketball victory.

The Cardinals (1-4/0-2 Mountain East Conference) came out like dynamite. The home team scored the opening five points and eventually push the difference to as many as 11 points, 24-13. Preseason MEC favorite Glenville State battled back to tie the game, 41-41, with four-plus minutes left in the first half and never trailed again over the final 22:16.

On the inside, Chenelle Moore added her fourth double-double in a row with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Mariah Callen chipped in 17 points with three treys, six boards and six assists. Sophomore Lauren Lipscomb hit her career-high of 14 points on 4 of 9 shots and grabbed six caroms.

Glenville State put five players in double figures led by Bhrea Griffin and Julie Bishop's 19 points apiece, who combined for 10 of the team's 20 3-pointer field goals.

The Pioneers dropped 20 of 47 from 3-point range as a team and forced the Cardinals into 21 turnovers.

WJU cut the nine-point halftime difference down to five-points, 53-48 and 58-53, and four points, 65-61, but Glenville State each time stymied the momentum by draining a 3-pointer. The home team cut it a third time in the third quarter down to five points, 68-63, with 2:19 only to see yet another Pioneer long-range answer.

Glenville State led by 11 points, 75-64, at the end of the third stanza and never had a advantage of less than 10 points over the final 11 minutes of play.

WJU has over a week off for the holiday until it travels to Notre Dame College on Wednesday, Nov. 29, for another 5:30 p.m. contest.
