Cardinals First-Half Charge Overpowers Pioneers

WHEELING, W.Va. – A four-minute Cardinals surge made all the difference. Wheeling Jesuit turned the engine on to a tune of 17-2 midway through the first half and charged past Glenville State men's basketball for an 89-65 final score.

Leading 21-18 at 10:07 in the opening half, a Ryan Cooper 3-pointer corner shot started the game-deciding Cardinals (5-0/2-0 Mountain East Conference). The WJU run ran off another nine-straight points before a Glenville State (0-5/0-2 MEC) put points on the board and broke open the night to 38-20 with 6:14 on the clock. The home advantage ballooned to 24 points at half and did not go under 21 points the rest of the evening.

"I am really happy with our defensive effort tonight. They (Glenville State) can score the basketball, but our ball screen defense and how active we were was great. We did a good job rebounding the basketball and a lot of guys played well," said WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "It was a true team effort. We needed to get out and get some buckets and needed to exploit that area (the factors in the big first half run). When you have 19 assists to only 10 turnovers, you know you took care of the ball."

MEC Player of the Week Haywood Highsmith continued his early season double-double production with 26 points on 11 of 17 shooting and 12 rebounds. Preston Boswell was right behind him in the backcourt with 21 points of his own on 7 of 16 from the floor to go with five boards and four assists.

"Haywood can shoot, post, rebound and score in every way possible. We need to have that continue to happen," added the WJU head coach. "Jeremiah Wilson explodes and moves so well and is a strong player who creates space. He was so active in the second half tonight and that was key."

Wilson added strong 13 points and five caroms. Brendan Hoban and Cooper both had seven points off the bench.

Glenville State received 19 points, five rebounds and three assists from guard Jon Dunmyer.

WJU heads back on the road for a single away contest on Wednesday, Nov. 29, in a 7:30 p.m. at Notre Dame College.
