Bobcats Hit Trey with Two Seconds to Bite Cardinals

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – After battling back from a 12-point second-half deficit, the Cardinals hopes were dashed by a 3-pointer. West Virginia Wesleyan's Tyra Hughes downed a trey to bite Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball, 85-82, on Saturday afternoon.
 
After the Hughes triple, the Cardinals (1-3/0-1 MEC) saw Monica Burns' heave from long-range go off the mark at the buzzer to dash their winning hopes. The Bobcats (1-1/1-0 MEC) pushed their seven-point intermission lead up to 12 points, 46-34, in the first 5:41 of the third quarter, before the visitors rushed back.
 
On the inside, WJU's Chenelle Moore downed 13 of 19 from the floor for a career-high 32 points to go with 12 rebounds, five assists and three steals. Burns also put up big numbers with 7 of 16 from the floor, including 4 of 6 treys and 8 of 8 foul shots, for 26 points.
 
Mariah Callen added 10 points and six assists.
 
West Virginia Wesleyan's Hughes received 25 points and 10 assists to led the winning effort.
 
Tied at 82 with one minute left in the game, Callen's jumper rolled off the rim and Moore's putback suffered the same result. The Bobcats grabbed the rebound and called timeout to setup what was Hughes' game-deciding triple.
 
WJU makes its home debut on Monday evening when it takes on Mountain East Conference favorite Glenville State in a 5:30 p.m. contest.
