Cardinals Fast Start Helps Cardinals Blitz Bobcats

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – An extremely fast Cardinals start left no doubt on the Saturday men's basketball court. Wheeling Jesuit raced out to an 18-point lead in the opening four minutes and blitzed West Virginia Wesleyan, 82-55, in the Mountain East Conference opener.

After the opening Bobcats (0-3) bucket, the Cardinals (4-0) saw Haywood Highsmith take over the early going with three buckets in an 11-0 run. The senior added another three scores for 13 of his game-high 26 points as part of a second run, 12-1, for the 23-5 lead in the first 4:05. West Virginia Wesleyan never made it closer than a 22-point margin in the second half.

"We played well in the first half where we played good team defense and made it difficult for them to score," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We did a nice job shooting the ball in the first half as our starters played well and Haywood was ready to play."

Highsmith connected on 11 of 15 from the floor for his 26 points and added 16 rebounds for his fourth double-double in as many games. He also added three steals, two assists and a blocked shot.

WJU saw three more players – Pat Moseh, Preston Boswell and Brent Pegram – all hit in double digits and combine for 45 points. Moseh made 7 of 8 attempts for 16 points and three assists. Boswell was 6 for 11 with a pair of treys for 15 points and a career-high seven assists. Pegram recorded his best game as a Cardinal with 14 points making all four of his shots and three 3-pointers to go with four assists.

"Pat and Preston were solid and Jeremiah (Wilson) and Drake (Goddard) did a nice job. Brent was ready to play tonight and did a nice job on both ends. Ryan (Cooper) and Brendan (Hoban) were solid. It was a nice team win," added Sancomb.

In racing out to a 34-point intermission lead (53-19), WJU shot 71-percent from the field (22 of 31 and 8 of 11 from 3-point range). The Cardinals also scored 28 points off Bobcat turnovers.

Aaron Ariri paced West Virginia Wesleyan with 15 points and eight rebounds.

WJU returns back to the McDonough Center on Monday night when it hosts Glenville State. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
