Boswell Off Balance Shot Propels Cardinals Past Panthers

WHEELING, W.Va. – Driving into the lane and lofting an off balance shot, Preston Boswell had the right touch as the shot dropped through the net with 3.4 seconds left the game and propelled Wheeling Jesuit past Virginia Union, 63-61.

The Panthers (1-2) could not get a potential game-winner shot attempt against the Cardinals (3-0) defense in the final three ticks of the clock. In a game where neither team led by more than five points, WJU did enough for the two-point victory.

"We have played three really hard games so far. There have been no easy games, but we want these type of games and we want to play these type of good teams," explained WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "Tonight, they gave us everything we could handle as it was a struggle for us. Their length was very challenging, but we have to do a better job against a zone. But, this game will help us down the road with seeing much zone defenses in the MEC (Mountain East Conference). We just did not shoot the ball well, but we will get better offensively."

Pat Moseh and Haywood Highsmith totaled double-doubles each. Moseh scored a team-high 17 points to go with 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals. Highsmith grabbed 10 boards to go with 11 points, five assists, four blocks and a pair of steals.

It was Boswell, though, who provided the home team's final six points of his 16 on the evening. He drained a trio of 3-pointers and assisted on two other buckets.

After having a tough first two collegiate contests, freshman Brandon Hoban came off the bench for 13 points, including three 3-pointers of his own. Ryan Cooper added seven rebounds and four points.

James Paige hit four treys and totaled 14 points to lead Virginia Union, who like WJU participated in last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional.

Leading by two with just under eight minutes left, Highsmith found Hoban for a 3-pointer for the largest margin of the night by either team of five, 56-51. The Panthers answered right back with the game's next three buckets and edged back in front, 57-56, with 3:15 on the clock.

Boswell hit another jumper inside with 42 seconds left to make it WJU 60-57. After a Paige layup pulled Va. Union to within a point, 60-59, at 22 seconds. The Panthers stole the Cardinals in bounds pass and they called a timeout right away, but did not have any left. Boswell made one of the two technical fouls, before Va. Union's Todd Hughes scored a put back to tie the game for the ninth time of the second half, 61-61.

After a WJU timeout with 12 seconds, Moseh found Boswell a step behind him on the right wing for the tough game-winning drive.

"Pat saw Preston get a step on his guy and Preston made a tough shot to win the game," said Sancomb.

WJU takes its show back on the road Saturday, Nov. 18, at West Virginia Wesleyan in a 4 p.m. contest.
