Cold Late-Shooting Dooms Cardinals Against Golden Bears

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – In a tight contest throughout, Kutztown took advantage of Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball going cold in the final 2:51 and prevailed in the fourth quarter for the 59-55 win on the second day of the Wolf Bus Line Classic.

After Monica Burns' fifth 3-pointer of the game, the Cardinals (1-1) edged back in front, 53-52, with 2:51 left in the game. The WJU triple turned out to be its last field goal of the game as Kutztown (1-1) netted the next five points on its way to the four-point victory.

"It was a tough turnaround playing last night at 6 p.m., then today at 1 p.m.," admitted Debbie Buff, WJU coach. "We played well in spurts, but not for 40 minutes. Chenelle getting in foul trouble hurt us. Our non-conference schedule is tough so need to learn and move forward."

With 14 points in the first half, Burns added five more tallies in the second half for a game-high 19, including 5 of 10 from long-range and draining all four free throws. Even with first-half foul trouble, Chenelle Moore posted a double-double of 12 points and 13 rebounds on the inside.

Sophomore Khira Burton totaled a career-best eight points and handed out two assists. Mariah Callen dished five assists to go with nine rebounds and two points. Cassie Stein chipped in eight rebounds and five points, while Lauren Lipscomb added six points and three caroms.

For the game, it was a tough shooting day for the Cardinals as they went 17 of 61 for only a 27.9-percent rate. WJU did win the rebound battle, 42-38.

Kutztown's Rylee Derr paced the winning attack with 19 points. Derr provided one of the biggest shots of the game with a 3-pointer with 1:47 left to push the margin back to five points, 58-53.

WJU started the game quick for the second day in a row. Burns dropped a pair of treys as the Cardinals ran out to an 8-2 lead. Ahead 8-7, Burns hit from long-range two more times and Callen laid in her only bucket of the day for a 14-7 advantage, before a 16-11 end of the quarter score.

Trailing 18-11, the Golden Bears put together a 10-0 spurt over a 1:54 time period of the second quarter to run in front 21-11. Then with 29 seconds in the half, a Tori Harrison 3-pointer tied the game, 28-28, for WJU.

In the third frame, Moore banked home three-straight layups to retie the game, 37-37, with 3:31 on the clock. With 44 seconds left in the third, Burton made both ends of a free throw pair for a WJU 41-40 lead.

Kutztown came out of the fourth period strong for a six-point lead at both 47-41 and 50-44. Lipscomb scored two layups around one from Moore as WJU retied the contest at 50 with 3:36. Behind 52-50, Burns hit her final triple for a 53-52 WJU slim lead, but it was the last bucket other than two Stein free throws in the final 2:51.

WJU continues its four-game road swing to open the season with a Wednesday night contest at Edinboro. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
