Cardinals Jump on Bulldogs for Sound Win

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Jumping on their opponent to the tune of scoring the game's first 11 points, the Cardinals showed their early season might Saturday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit made it a perfect weekend with a sound defeat of Bowie State, 87-72, in the second day of the Clarion Hotel Classic at Shepherd University.

Between layups and assists, Haywood Highsmith and Pat Moseh put the throttle down from the start. The Cardinals' seniors were responsible for scoring or assisting on the team's opening five buckets for an 11-0 run. Bowie State (1-1) netted the opening second-half points, before WJU (2-0) answered by pushing the margin up to 17 points, 60-43, and shut the door.

"Our team had a great team effort and our guys did a great job executing the game plan," noted WJU coach Danny Sancomb. "Haywood played well as he dominated the glass and scored the ball (inside &out). Pat did a nice job scoring and making plays for his teammates, while Preston (Boswell) scored the ball and Jeremiah (Wilson) scored, rebounded the ball, and played great defense. We also had great contribution from Ryan (Cooper) and Brent (Pegram)."

Highsmith, Moseh and Boswell each one reached the 20-point mark. Highsmith, though, had one of his hugh outings. The senior forward put 10 of his 14 attempts from the floor through the bucket and made 6 of 7 free throws for 27 points. He also pulled down 16 boards and blocked a pair of shots.

Moseh made 7 of 11 tries for 21 points to go with six rebounds and four assists. Boswell hit for his second 20-point game of the weekend with 20 points on 5 for 8 shooting, including 8 of 9 from the charity stripe.

Wilson narrowly missed another double-double with 12 points and eight boards. Cooper added six tallies and four caroms off the bench.

For the game, WJU connected on 29 of 50 shots for a 58.0-percent rate. The Cardinals also dominated the Bulldogs on the boards, 41-24.

Ahmaad Wilson led the Bulldogs scorers with 18 points, including four treys.

WJU makes its 2017-18 home debut on Wednesday night, Nov. 15, against NCAA Regional qualifier Virginia Union in a 7:30 p.m. matchup.
