Callen Breaks 1,000 Points, Guides Cardinals Past Raiders in Opener

SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. – Mariah Callen and Monica Burns wasted no time in showing their might in the new 2017-18 women's basketball season. The two Wheeling Jesuit guards outscored Shippensburg by themselves in the first half and guided their team to a 72-63 season-opening victory at the Wolf's Bus Lines Classic.

Down 4-2 in the opening moments, Burns downed back-to-back 3-pointers to start a 12-0 run and the Cardinals (1-0) never looked back. The WJU run made it 14-4 and it built a 20-10 first frame advantage. Another 9-0 spurt in the second quarter pushed the margin to 15 points, 34-19, and the Cardinals allowed the Raiders (0-1) to get no closer than seven points five times in the second half.

With her layup at 1:05 in the third quarter, Callen became WJU's newest member of the 1,000-point club. The senior from Morgantown, W.Va., finished the night with a team-high 20 points and now has 1,006 points to her credit. She also had three assists and a pair of steals.

Burns made history of her own. The redshirt junior went 6 for 6 from the foul line to extend her NCAA Division II streak of consecutive free throws made to 101. Her free throw machine even surpassed the National Basketball Association's record of 97-straight with her third make. For the game, Burns finished with 16 points and three steals.

"It was a great team effort. We followed the game plan and executed down the stretch when we needed to," said WJU coach Debbie Buff. "I wouldn't want to coach any other team. Congrats to Mariah and Mo on their accomplishments!!! Kiara Wade and Cassi Stein really stepped up for us tonight."

Buff also reached an accomplishment of her own. The seventh-year WJU head coach won her 100th game with the program.

Along with Callen and Burns, Stein saw the most action in almost two full seasons with 10 points on 4 of 4 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Chenelle Moore and Wade made for a one-two inside punch with eight points and 12 rebounds and 10 tallies and seven boards.

WJU took advantage of Shippenburg turnovers to the tune of 22 points and added 18 points on second chance attempts.

The Cardinals netted the first two baskets of the second half and made it an 8-2 run to expand their lead to 42-24. The Raiders battled back to with seven points three times late in the third frame and two more times in the fourth, but could get no closer.

Ariel Jones earned high-game honors with 24 points to lead the Raiders.

WJU finishes its opening weekend with a 1 p.m. contest on Saturday against Kutztown.
