Cardinals Control Extra Period, Overtake Golden Knights

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W.Va. – On a court where they have found success now in the last 10 contests, the Cardinals started with a tough hardwood opening men's basketball victory. After hot late-second half Gannon shooting closed the gap, Wheeling Jesuit retook control in overtime for an 81-74 win at the Clarion Hotel Classic.

Down 67-66 only 31 seconds into the extra period, Pat Moseh canned a pair of free throws and Haywood Highsmith grabbed the offensive rebound and added two more from the charity stripe for a 70-67 WJU (1-0) lead. The Cardinals never gave up the advantage in the final 3:36, including an 80-72 lead with 12.5 seconds.

"It was a good team win. We need to do a better job closing the game. I am happy with how we battled in overtime," said Cardinals head coach Danny Sancomb. "Jeremiah Wilson played big for us. Haywood, Pat, and Preston (Boswell) were solid. I was very happy with our bench Ryan Cooper, Brent (Pegram), and (Hoban) were solid. We have a long way to go but we are headed in the right direction."

The Cardinals right direction has happened the last 10 times they have played on the Shepherd University home court in the last four years.

Boswell picked up where he left off in his freshman year. The now sophomore pumped in 22 points on 7 of 14 from the floor.

Moseh was the do-it-all senior with 19 points, eight assists, four rebounds and three steals. He had four points and two of those assists in the overtime.

Highsmith posted his double-double of 17 points on 6 of 11 shooting and 10 rebounds. He also had three assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

In his WJU debut, Wilson had his own double-double of 13 points and 10 boards. Cooper chipped in six points and Pegram three.

Gannon (0-1) saw Zay Jackson hit for 23 points, while Even Phoenix added 19 points and eight caroms.

In the opening half, the teams played even for the first 14:50. After the final first-half media timeout tied at 20, the Cardinals netted the next eight points, 28-20, over a 1:51 period behind a Pegram triple, Boswell fastbreak lay-in and Cooper left corner trey. WJU then took a 34-27 intermission lead.

WJU kept Gannon at bay in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza until back-to-back sets of Boswell foul shots made it a 10-point margin, 53-43, at 9:33.

Trailing 61-55, the Golden Knights started hitting all their floor attempts. Jackson downed back-to-back jumpers as Gannon went on a 9-2 run to take its first lead since 11 minutes into the contest at 64-63.

A Wilson 3-point play push WJU back ahead, 66-64, at 2:08. After empty trips by both teams, Jackson was fouled from 3-point range. He missed the first and made the second two tries for the 66-66 deadlock.

WJU heads back to the court to wrap up the weekend pair of contests in a 4 p.m. game against Bowie State.
