Cardinals Defense Helps Weather Storm

WHEELING, W.Va. – Stepping out of the conference, the Cardinals defense helped weather the Wednesday evening Storm. The Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team added another victory in a 3-1 final over Lake Erie College.
 
The Storm (22-8) came out strong and never trailed in the opening set 25-21 win. Leading set two 18-10, the Cardinals (24-4) rattled off the final seven points in the 25-10 win to even the match. In the set of the night,
 
Lake Erie College came back from being down by six late, 22-16, and worked the score to a tie at 24. After three more ties, Cassie Meyer and Haley Kramer downed back-to-back kills and WJU pulled out the key 29-27 third set. Tied at eight in the fourth set, the home team posted the next four points, and eventually took the advantage to seven points, before the 25-16 final tally to end the match.
 
Meyer recorded another double-double to lead the home charge with 18 kills and 17 digs, as she was also in on three blocks and lined an ace. Kramer chipped in 16 kills and five blocks, while Maddy Smyth downed 10 winners and blocked three Storm attacks.
 
The Mountain East Conference Player of the Week, Stephanie Sylvester, handed out 55 assists to go with 15 digs, two aces, a block and one kill. Audrey Francis dug 29 visitor attacks and Abby Moffit had nine.
 
Makenna Babb added nine kills and 24 digs.
 
After taking the 2-1 match lead, WJU had its best hitting set of the night of .353 with 13 kills and one error in 34 attacks. The Cardinals' defense held the Storm to a .152 hit percentage.
 
Bethany Fisher paced Lake Erie with 15 kills and three blocks.
 
The Cardinals have Thursday off before they start a MEC weekend road trip. WJU takes the court in Athens, W.Va., Friday night in a 7 p.m. match at Concord.
