WJU Rugby Dominates UBuffalo

WHEELING, W.Va. – In the home opener, the Cardinals came out of the gate strong and never allowed the visiting Bulls in the game. The Wheeling Jesuit rugby team crossed the goaline for a try within the second minute of the match and ran off the first 42 points on the way to a dominate 73-7 final over the University of Buffalo Saturday evening.

The Cardinals (1-2) scoring starting on their opening possession when fly half George Roscoe saw space up the middle and dotted down in the corner. WJU strung together phases and found the try zone five more times in the first half from Inosi Kau, Killian Gause, Frank Rolf and Ryan Graggs. Gau's second try of the match came from a cherry pick interception of the UBuffalo's backward shovel and raced 60 yards down the field.

The Bulls scored their lone points of the match with 1:33 left in the first half, and they trailed 42-7 at intermission.

The WJU victory gave first-year head coach Jake Fautley his first collegiate coaching victory.

In the second half, the Cardinals continued their scoring binge. Within the second minute, flanker Andrew Waggoner put his first try of the day on the scoreboard. Roscoe added his second and third tries, while Gau equaled his effort with a third try for two WJU 'hat tricks' and a 61-7 advantage.

Gause and Ieuan Nation completed the night's scoring for the 73-7 final. Roscoe connected for nine conversion kicks, while Joe Broderick booted the other one.

WJU returns to Bishop Schmitt Field for its second and biggest home match of the fall next Saturday, Oct. 14. The Cardinals welcome the Nittany Lions of Penn State for a 5 p.m. match.
