Cardinals Come up Short Against Hilltoppers


WHEELING, W.Va. – The Cardinals put up a strong fight all of the first half, but the Hilltoppers prevailed after a rebound goal in the second half. West Liberty scored the victory over Wheeling Jesuit in the 1-0 Mountain East Conference women's soccer match.

The Cardinals (3-8/2-7 MEC) kicked seven first-half shots including a double of Kendra Benzel, keeping up with an equal amount of shots of the Hilltoppers(4-5-2/3-5-2 MEC). The home team added two more shots on goal in the second half. The visiting West Liberty teammate Layne Hartnell received the match's sole score at 52:56. The Jesuits came up short after 13 attempted shots.
 
WJU goalie Hannah Thompson made seven impressive saves, while Karly Judy and Micah Miller paced the Cardinals attack with one shot on goal each.
 
The Cardinals stays at home to host the Falcons in a 2:00 p.m. match Sunday afternoon, Oct. 8.
