Cardinals Prevail over Falcons & Pioneers

WHEELING, W.Va. – In a tough task for any team, the Cardinals claimed two tough four-set wins on Saturday afternoon in back-to-back matches. Wheeling Jesuit prevailed in the battle of the top two Mountain East Conference teams in a 3-1 victory over Fairmont State and less than an hour later defeated Malone University by the same 3-1 score.
 
The Cardinals (23-4/12-0 MEC) grabbed the first set, 25-18, before the Falcons (17-8/8-3 MEC) tied it with a 25-22 second set. WJU answered with two decisive third and fourth sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-17.
 
In the second match, WJU went out to a 2-0 match lead (25-20 and 25-12), but Malone (14-11) rallied for a 25-19 third set score. The Cardinals ran out to a 19-8 fourth set lead and held off the Pioneers comeback in a 25-17 final to end the match.
 
Against FSU, Cassie Meyer pounded 19 kills, dug 19 attacks lined a pair of aces and was in on two blocks to lead WJU. Meyer helped the home team hit over .300 for the third time this week in a .310 clip. Stephanie Sylvester posted a career-high 61 set assists to go with 13 digs and three kills. Makenna Babb recorded 26 digs and Audrey Francis 22 in the win.
 
In the afternoon contest, Makenna Babb lined 13 kills to go with 17 digs, while Maddy Smyth also downed 13 winners and blocked four Malone attacks. Francis contributed 19 digs and three aces.
 
Mackenzie Harrison powered 18 kills, dug 21 digs and added six blocks for the Fairmont State effort. Faith Lau led Malone with 11 kills and 18 digs.
 
WJU stays at home for one more match next Wednesday evening against Lake Erie College. First serve is set for 6 p.m.
