Cardinals Turn Away Tough Rams Squad

WHEELING, W.Va. – In an improving Mountain East Conference field of teams, the Cardinals turned away one of the quickly improving team in the Rams Friday night. Wheeling Jesuit came back from eight points behind to take the first set and rode the wave from there in a 3-0 victory over Shepherd.
 
Trailing 17-9 in the opening set, the young Cardinals (21-4/11-0 MEC) rattled off seven-straight points to pull within a point, 17-16. WJU scored four of the next six tallies, and went on for the 25-20 comeback win. WJU trailed only a single point in the next two sets in 25-17 and 25-21 scores over Shepherd (17-6/6-4 MEC).
 
Haley Kramer pounded 19 kills with a .567 hit percentage along the WJU frontline. Cassie Meyer added 12 kills and eight digs. The reigning MEC Player of the Week Maddy Smyth continued her solid play with seven kills, a .368 percentage and four blocks.
 
Stephanie Sylvester handed out 46 assists and finished with a double-double with 10 digs. Makenna Babb dug a team-best 14 attacks and downed three kills, while Audrey Francis had 12 and Abby Moffit 11.
 
For the second time this week, the Cardinals hit over .300 for the match at .322 over 118 swings.
 
Cambriea Hill lined 14 kills to go with 10 digs and a block to lead Shepherd.
 
WJU goes right back to the court for two Saturday home matches – 1 p.m. versus Fairmont State and 3 p.m. against Malone University.
