Vogt Late Goal Not Enough Against Slippery Rock

WHEELING, W.Va. – With the match dominated on their offensive end, the Cardinals could not take advantage of more than one opportunity Wednesday evening. Matt Vogt headed a late goal off a defender, but it was not enough for the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team in a 2-1 defeat to Slippery Rock.

The Rock (5-9-3) took the early lead as Hayden Seifert assisted on a Justin Minda score at 8:24, before he netted his own score later in the opening stanza (33:11) to open a 2-0 lead. WJU (4-10-2) could not take advantage of nine first-half chances, including four on goal. The Cardinals remained shut out until Bryce Porter's right sideline throw in, which Vogt headed off a Slippery Rock defender in the 84th minute of play. A Dominque Pierce boot went wide left (85:23) and Owain Hawkins stuck the ball just high with 2:23 left in the match in an attempt to tie the match.

On the night, Tyler Shotwell saved two Slippery Rock attempts, while the WJU defense added a team save in the first half.

With the majority of the possessions, the Cardinals doubled the Rock's shots, 16-8, and held an 8-3 corner kick advantage.

In the first half, Martin Minuzzi had the first home shot on goal saved at 14:52 and Hawkins had another come 15 minutes later. Sullian Saouzanet produced a flurry with back-to-back shots on net at 34:31 and 36:48, before he sailed a third-straight boot wide (40:22).

WJU celebrates 'Senior Day' in the season finale on Saturday, Oct. 28, in a 1 p.m. contest against West Virginia Wesleyan.
