Cardinals Have Strong Showing, Tie Rams

SHEPERDSTOWN, W.Va. – Despite narrowly missing on five second-half opportunities, the Cardinals had a very strong Sunday road showing. After a 42nd-minute Natalie Indermuhle header, the Wheeling Jesuit women's soccer team saw Shepherd tie the game in the second half and play to a 1-1 Mountain East Conference tie.
 
On a Micah Miller corner kick, Indermuhle headed her second WJU (4-11-1/3-10-1 MEC) goal of the season into the net at 41:55. The Rams (4-5-6/4-4-6 MEC) deadlocked the match, 1-1, when Samantha Leonard score with 74:45 on the clock. Each team had one shot on goal over the two extra periods as the game ended with the same score.
 
With its 1-0 advantage, the Cardinals put on the second-half pressure. Nikki Hillard started it with a shot flying wide left (62:05), before Miller hit the post 55 second later. Following a Rams' foul in the box, Brianna Murgi saw her penalty kick boot saved and denied from entering the goal.
 
Jenny Soegaard-Andersen connected on a high shot (80:33), before Miller had another visitors' opportunity thwarted by the Shepherd goalie with a save.
 
Hillard stared the first overtime sailed a shot to the left of the goal (91:47). WJU goalie Hannah Thompson saved a Shepherd shot as time ran out.
 
In the second extra period, Emily Hartley blasted an early attempt (100:56) that was saved. Shepherd mounted three shots, which each went wide over the final seven minutes of action.
 
Thompson stopped five Rams shot in net. Shepherd finished with the 19-12 shot advantage.
 
WJU plays its final MEC road game on Wednesday night, Oct. 25, in a 7 p.m. match at Fairmont State.
