Cardinals Post Second Shutout of Rams

SHEPERDSTOWN, W.Va. – On a beautiful Sunday afternoon, the Cardinals repeated their outcome from 19 days ago. The Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team scored once in the first half and two more times in the second 45 minutes to post its second shutout of Shepherd, 3-0.
 
On the second shot of the first half, Martin Minuzzi found paydirt and put WJU (4-9-2/2-8-1 Mountain East Conference) on the scoreboard at 16:03. The score remained 1-0 until Owain Hawkins passed to Yafeu Rougier, who boot the ball in the goal, for the second visiting tally (52:13). Minuzzi assisted on the final Cardinals score off Jordan Simpson's foot for the 3-0 final at 75:28.
 
"It was the same as home. We scored early to take the emotion out of their Senior Day," noted WJU head coach Jim Regan. "We played well defensively and saw the game out with two good finishes at the end."
 
The Rams (0-15-1/0-10 MEC) held a slight 5-4 shot advantage in the first stanza, but the Cardinals finished with an 11-9 edge for the match. Tyler Shotwell recorded his second shutout of the MEC member with three saves.
 
WJU claimed the first meeting, 5-0, in Wheeling on October 3.
 
WJU finishes its regular season with a pair of home matches this week. The Cardinals host The Rock of Slippery Rock in a Wednesday night, Oct. 25, match starting at 7:30 p.m.
