Cardinals Play to Strong Tie Versus Mt. Lions

ATHENS, W.Va. – For the second time this season, the Cardinals and Mountain Lions played extra time. On Wednesday, an extra 20 minutes was not enough to break a 1-1 deadlock between the Wheeling Jesuit and Concord men's soccer.

After a scoreless match midway through the first half, Manny Del Rio headed the ball into the back of the net off an Owain Hawkins free kick for a 1-0 WJU (3-9-2/1-8-1 Mountain East Conference) lead at 29:46. Concord's Maxime Ramioulle tied the match at 1-1 on a score in the 79th minute.

A Matt Vogt header at 85:42 went high as the final Cardinals attempt in regulation. In the second overtime, Lucas Fievet's shot went wide (106:45), before Josh Zimmerman saved the final Mt. Lion boot (109:56) in the last seconds.

"We dominated the first half and had a great work rate. Our lack of depth in second half saw them put more pressure on us to get equalizer," said Cardinals coach Jim Regan. "Overtime the teams were pretty even with no quality chances. We had 14 corners and no finishes from them."

In his second start, Zimmerman posted eight saves on 14 shots faced.

WJU continues its three-match road swing with a Sunday, Oct. 22, contest at Shepherd starting at 1 p.m.
