No. 1 Golden Eagles Take Care of Cardinals

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – In the rematch of a last-second thriller last month, the No. 1 University of Charleston men's soccer team did not wait until the final minute in Sunday's bout as it took care of Wheeling Jesuit, 6-0.

The Cardinals (3-9-1/1-8 Mountain East Conference) saw goalie Tyler Shotwell turn away five Golden Eagles (13-0/9-0 MEC) shots in the first 26 minutes. Charleston converted a penalty kick after a WJU yellow card, added a second one before half, and found the back of the net four more times in the second half.

"Our lack of depth and injuries caught up with us," said WJU head coach Jim Regan. "Their quality was too much for us today."

The Charleston defense held WJU without a shot attempt for the 90-minute match.

Shotwell recorded eight saves for the day. He stopped the first shot at 14:32 into the match and gathered in four more in a row over the next 12 minutes.

Will Roberts scored twice for UC.

WJU continues on the road for a Wednesday night, Oct. 18, match at Concord. The match has an 3:30 p.m. start.
