Cardinals Use Early Lead, Defeat Bobcats

WHEELING, W. Va. – In a Sunday matinee, the Wheeling Jesuit used an early double-digit lead and went on to defeat West Virginia Wesleyan, 82-73, in men's Mountain East Conference basketball.

The No. 8 Cardinals (12-1/6-1 MEC) netted the opening nine points of the day and 13 of the first 15 points over five minutes. WJU held a 12 to 15-point lead most of the day and as many as 21 points, before it held a late West Virginia Wesleyan (5-8/2-5 MEC) charge off.

"Good balanced scored today," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "We need to be better doing the little things of knowing personnel, rebounding, and making free throws. We have to play with high energy for 40 minutes. We played well in the first half, but slept walked through the second."

The Cardinals, again, showed a balanced attack. Pat Moseh cut through the Bobcat defense for a team-high 19 points on 6 of 11 shooting and seven rebounds.

Kyle Ritz added 15 points on 6 of 9 himself and six boards, while Haywood Highsmith chipped in 12 points, seven caroms and four assists.

In the backcourt, Preston Boswell hit for nine first-half points and 13 for the day and had three helpers. Jarin Hilson contributued 11 points and a pair of treys off the bench.

The Cardinals advantage had the chance to be a lot more, but the home squad dropped on 17 of 37 free throw attempts through the twine.

WJU did take care of the ball with only six turnovers, while it forced West Virginia Wesleyan into 13.

The Bobcats' Quin Nottingham led all scorers with 20 points off their bench and Clay Todd hit all 18 of his tallies in the second half.

West Virginia Wesleyan cut its first-half deficit down to as few as five points, 25-20, before WJU answered with an 8-0 spurt. Moseh made an inside jumper with 38 seconds left in the half for a 45-29 score.

The WJU lead grew to 21 points, 55-34, early in the second 20 minutes on another Moseh inside bucket. The Bobcats used some hot shooting late, but could get no closer than the final nine-point margin.

WJU remains at home for a Tuesday night, Jan. 10, contest against Glenville State starting at 7:30 p.m.
