Mid-Game Separation Takes Cardinals Over Pioneers

Wheeling Intelligencer Story
WHEELING, W. Va. – In a competitive opening half, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team used a combined 11-0 run and used the mid-game separation to overtake Glenville State, 104-94 Tuesday night.

Leading 47-41 with two minutes left in the opening stanza, the No. 6 Cardinals (13-1/7-1 Mountain East Conference) netted the final five points. WJU pumped in the second half's first six points via the Haywood Highsmith and Kyle Ritz combo to complete the 11-0 run for a 61-44 lead on Glenville State (6-6/3-5 MEC). The Cardinals extended the margin to a comfortable 22 points, 83-61, with 10:03 remaining, before the Pioneers scored the final 10 points for a closer than the game played final.

"We executed great on the half court – moved the ball, shared the ball, made shots and we were hard to guard. Glenville is a really good team who played hard," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb.

I love how we closed out the first half with a group of guys who are not always out there together and continued it into the first four minutes of the second half. Our energy coming out in the second half was great," continued the Cardinals coach.

In what seemed like a quiet total, Preston Boswell posted his season-high 22 points off the bench in 24 minutes. The freshman guard made 7 of 11 shots and 4 of 6 treys for the point total.

Boswell saw five other teammates reach double figures for the third time in four games. Ritz led the other five WJU players with 16 points on 6 of 10 attempts to go with five rebounds and three assists.

Pat Moseh added 15 points, while Highsmith chipped in 13 points, all in the second half, and nine caroms.

Off the bench, Dominique Tham had an all-around game of 12 points, five rebounds and three assists. Jarin Hilson finished the double-digit Cardinals with 11 points and three helpers.

"Dominique Tham is just a warrior and a pinball inside. We had great minutes from Preston (Boswell), Hilson and Matt Stewart," noted Sancomb. "I feel we wore them down in the second half a bit. Our rebounding in the second half was a lot better as we emphasized it. Also, our 56-percent from the floor means our guys took great shots. Our guys are so unselfish."

The Cardinals recorded 24 assists on 40 buckets in 72 shots as a team. WJU showed a dramatic foul line improvement from two days ago with 14 of 17 made free throws.

Glenville State put six players in double figures led by Brook Ely's 20-point night.

WJU continues at home against Concord Saturday afternoon, Jan. 14, in a 3 p.m. contest.
