Boswell Drive and Haywood Block Helps WJU Escape Past Concord

Boswell Game-Winning Drive Highlight
Highsmith Late-Second Block
WHEELING, W. Va. –
A Preston Boswell runner in the lane pushed the Cardinals back on top and a Haywood Highsmith with four seconds sealed the win. Wheeling Jesuit scored the final four points and escaped a hard-charging Concord men's basketball team, 83-80, Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 80-79, Boswell drove deep into the lane and put up the game-deciding jumper with 17 seconds left for the WJU (14-1/8-1 MEC) 81-80 lead. With four seconds left, Concord's Tommy Bolte 3-pointer at the top of the key was swatted by Highsmith and Kyle Ritz pulled in the errant ball. After a pair of Ritz free throws, Drake Goddard fouled Mountain Lion (5-10/1-8 MEC) Michael Sanchez on a planned reach in in the backcourt with 1.1 on the clock. Sanchez missed the free throw and the ensuring Highsmith rebound ended the contest.

"I am very happy we won. In the last minute, we did a wonderful job of execution. We had a great screen for Preston and he did a great job finishing. Drake also executed the foul on the second dribble and Kyle grabbed the defensive rebound and made the free throws," noted WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "I have to tip my hat to Concord as they played hard and played smart. We did a really good job on the glass, but we struggled defensively today."

The Cardinals win ran their streak to nine straight.

Highsmith's 22-point day was his highest season total since the season opener, fourth 20-point game and MEC-leading ninth double-double (11 rebounds). He connected on 8 of 14 attempts and 5 of 6 from the foul line.

Pat Moseh slashed his way to a 6 for 11 day and 16 points to go with seven boards. Ritz netted 11 of his 13 points in the second-half and recorded his third double-double with 10 rebounds.

Boswell scored all 11 of his points in the second half. Jarin Hilson and Dominique Tham added nine and seven points off the WJU bench.

The Cardinals won the battle on the glass, 39-29.

All five Concord starters reached double figures with Sanchez's 18 points leading its way.

WJU enjoyed the game's largest lead of nine, 24-15, while Concord had its biggest of four points, 48-44, with 16:12 left. The tight contest saw 14 ties over the 40 minutes.

The contest's final five minutes saw two ties and five lead changes.

"We have to play a lot better than we did today," finished Sancomb.

WJU returns back to the McDonough Center Monday evening. The Cardinals host the Cavaliers of UVa-Wise in a 6 p.m. contest.
