Hilson Triple and Fast OT Start Vaults Cardinals Over Cavaliers

Hilson Game-Tying 3-pointer Highlight
WHEELING, W. Va
A Jarin Hilson top-of-the-key buzzer-beating 3-pointer forced overtime and the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team rode the momentum and vaulted over the upset-minded University of Virginia's College at Wise, 88-81, Monday night.

After the Cavaliers (3-13/1-9 Mountain East Conference) missed the second of two free throws with four seconds left, Kyle Ritz pulled in the rebound passed to Hilson, who drove to the top of the arc and saw his game-tying trey go through the net as the backboard lit up ending regulation, 74-74. The No. 6 Cardinals (15-1/9-1 MEC) registered the extra period's first seven points and never trailed in overtime for the victory.

"It was such a hard-fought win and I tip my hat to UVa-Wise as they played very well," stressed WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "A big shot by Jarin Hilson. Our guys kept playing for 40 minutes and believed we had the chance to win. It's getting that time of the year where execution is very important. I am really proud of how our guys kept battling. They did a real good job on the glass and move the ball well in the second half."

Senior Kyle Ritz paced the Cardinals effort with 21 points on 7 of 12 attempts and 12 rebounds.

Pat Moseh joined Ritz in the 1,000-career point club (Moseh 1,000th career-point basket highlight)with 16 points on 7 of 14 shots and 12 boards. Moseh now has a career point total of 1,005 points.

The Cardinals' bench contributed 39 points with both Dominique Tham and Preston Boswell posting 14 tallies. Hilson added 11 points, including the game-tying triple. Tham's 14-point night set the sophomore's career high and he pulled down nine rebounds, six offensive.

"Dominique Tham played wonderfully off the bench. Pat and Kyle did a good job offensively all-around as they both took high-percentage shots.

UVa-Wise's Dimitri Sousa pumped in six 3-pointers and a game-high 27 points. Taiwo Badmus was right behind with 23 points.

The Cardinals dominated the rebounding department, 49-30, with 20 of them coming on the offensive end of the floor.

The leading team time was close in final time (22:09 to 18:55), but UVa-Wise found WJU had just enough to send the contest to the extra five minutes for the win.
Tied at 24-24 with five minutes left in the first half, UVa.-Wise finished the opening 20 minutes on a 10-3 run and took a 34-27 advantage to the intermission.

The Cavaliers' lead grew to as many as 13 points twice, 51-38 and 54-41, with 12:37 left in the contest. The home club started its comeback from there.

Over the next 2:27 minutes, WJU cut the margin to four points, 54-50, on a Tham inside layup. UVa-Wise extended it back to eight points, 60-52, at 7:48, but the tide turned from there.

WJU netted the next nine points for a 61-60 lead on a Ritz inside bucket off a Tham pass at 5:42. It was the home team's first lead since 5:35 in the opening half.

The Cavaliers did not go away as Michal Seals dropped a triple for a four-point visitor lead, 67-63. WJU put in the next six points capped by a Boswell layup for a 69-67 edge with 1:59 left.

Sousa's sixth 3-pointer with 17 seconds left made it 73-71 UVa.-Wise. After Yesid Mosquera-Perea stripped Haywood Highsmith, who played only 18 minutes due to foul trouble and had a season-low five points, and was fouled. The Cavaliers' player made the first, but missed the second on a clear foul lane and Hilson was off the other way with his game-tying bucket.

The WJU victory, its 10th-straight, sets up the Ohio Valley rivalry game against No. 4 West Liberty Thursday night. The Cardinals travel up the hill for the 7:30 p.m. tip against the Hilltoppers.

"We have to focus on our execution and be more ready to play," added Sancomb.
