Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Chris Myers

Cardinals Prevail over Yellow Jackets, 95-85

INSTITUTE, W. Va On a snowy Thursday night, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team prevailed over a pesky host West Virginia State squad, 95-85, in Mountain East Conference action.

A Chase Lawson 3-pointer 9:44 into the game pushed the Cardinals (11-1/5-1 MEC) ahead for good, 24-22. WJU held a 10-point halftime advantage and refused to allow West Virginia State (5-7/2-4 MEC) any closer than six points in the latter half.

"It was a nice team win. Give credit to West Virginia State as they played with high energy," said Cardinals coach Danny Sancomb. "We played well offensively with six guys in double figures.

Senior Kyle Ritz was the WJU Player of the Night with his second double-double of the year with 19 points (7 of 10 from the field) with 16 rebounds.

Ritz was one of six WJU double-digit scorers for the second game in a row. Pat Moseh made 7 of 11 shots for 16 points.

Haywood Highsmith, Dominique Tham and Jarin Hilson all produced 11 points apiece. Highsmith had nine rebounds, Tham pulled down six rebounds and Hilson dished three assists. Boswell hit a pair of triples and finished with 10 points.

"Kyle (Ritz) played well scoring and rebounding and Pat (Moseh) did a nice job scoring the ball. Drake (Goddard) and Jarin (Hilson) did a great job running the team. Preston and dom were solid off the bench. We have to keep working to get better," added Sancomb.

WJU trailed by as many as four points in the opening six minutes of play. A Tham layup at 13:18 was the visitors' first led, 19-18. Two minutes later, the Lawson trey pushed the Cards ahead for good over the final 31 minutes of play.

Lawson's second 3-pointer in the final first-half seconds pushed WJU to a 10-point, 55-45, intermission score.

Drake Goddard, who had nine points, laid the ball in with 17:40 for the Cardinals largest second-half lead of 14 points, 63-49. The Yellow Jackets, though, didn't go away all night. West Virginia State pulled to within six points, 70-64 at 11:24 and then again late 89-83 with 1:37 on the clock. WJU had the answer each home spurt  and recorded the 10-point victory.

WJU has two days off until it hosts West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon at 4 p.m.
