Cardinals Show Strong, Soar over Golden Eagles

WHEELING, W. Va. – The Cardinals' first 2017 appearance did not disappoint. Wheeling Jesuit connected on half its shots and soared past the University of Charleston, 94-77, in Mountain East Conference play.

After the opening Golden Eagles (9-2/3-2 MEC) basket, the No. 8 Cardinals (10-1/4-1 MEC) netted the next eight points and never trailed over the final 19 minutes of play. WJU posted an 8-0 spurt with eight minutes left for a 17-point advantage, 82-65, and erased any doubt of the game's outcome.

"It was a great team win. They hold team to under 37-percent shooting and we were very successful tonight. We played very unselfish and took care of the ball," stressed WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "I am glad how we did on the glass and our guys did a good job battling. Our half-court defense was good, but we have to get better in transition."

"Pat (Moseh) provided great energy tonight from the start. Kyle (Ritz) and Haywood (Highsmith) controlled the rebounding for us," added Sancomb.

Chase Lawson pumped in four treys and 17 points. Guards Preston Boswell and Jarin Hilson chipped in 10 points apiece for six double-digit scorers.

"Chase got off to a great start tonight," explained the Cardinals coach. "Our bench was key. Hilson and also Drake Goddard doing a great job on their leading scorer Cole. Matt Stewart had a lot of positive minutes for us as well."

Stewart had five points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Keir Anderson paced Charleston with 17 points and Shaq Speights had 14 points.

A Jonathan Joseph dunk 5:21 into the contest pulled Charleston to within a point, 14-13. WJU answered back with seven points in a row started by a Boswell triple and pushed it back to 21-13. The home team led 47-39 at half.

The Golden Eagles cut the margin to six points four times in the opening 4:31 of the second half. Leading 55-49, Lawson and Hilson downed back-to-back jumpers and helped WJU push it into double figures again, 62-49.

WJU makes it first 2017 road trip Thursday night in a 7:30 p.m. contest at West Virginia State.
