Cards Compile 18-0 Run, Take Care of Business in Charleston

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -  Wheeling Jesuit traveled to Charleston Saturday afternoon in the second meeting between the Mountain East Conference opponents. UC began the game on an 11-2 run, forcing a Wheeling Jesuit timeout, but the Cardinals would respond with their most impressive run of the season. WJU would later cruise to a 26-point victory, 74-48.

"Yesterday we asked our team to set five goals for today, and we were able to go out and achieve four of the five," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "Today was probably the best we locked into our scout all year. Our team defense was outstanding for 40 minutes. We spoke about being road warriors today and we certainly were. We shared the ball by making the extra pass all day, and I am very proud of our effort and attitude to get the win."

WJU would rattle off its longest run of the season, 18-0, taking a 20-11 lead. Over the remaining minutes of the first half, the visitors would stretch their lead to 18 points, taking a 34-7 run and a 38-16 lead into the intermission.

Monica Burns scored 16 points in the first 20 minutes for the Cardinals on 5-9 shooting. Burns buried three of five attempts from three on her way to the double-digit first half.

The Cardinals occupied a 56-37 lead early in the fourth quarter before Burns added five points in two possessions, stretching WJU's lead to 24 points, 61-37, and pushing Burns over her previous season-high, 22 points.

Mariah Callen knocked down another trey on the Cardinals next trip down the court, extending the guests lead to 64-37. Callen found Jaana Motton on the next trip down the court, and the Cardinals led by 29 points.

Senior Kylie Frizell continued the Cardinals surge, burying a three and sending the lead to 32 points, 69-37.

As a team, WJU finished 9-20 from three-point range, shooting a stellar 45 percent. The Cardinals finished 25-51 from the field, shooting at a 49 percent clip.

Burns finished with a season-high 24 points on 8-14 shooting, including five of eight from three-point range. Callen finished with a season-high eight assists and 12 points. Frizell added her second-straight double figure game, scoring 15 points on 6-9 shooting.

Motton added 10 points and seven boards while Lydia Hyburg chipped in seven tallies and three rebounds. Chelsea Richardson shot twice and scored one bucket to go along with her four rebounds.
