Cole’s 39 Points Sinks WJU for Charleston Upset

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – It took an extraordinary effort for it to happen. For the first time in 20 contests, the Wheeling Jesuit men's basketball team fell in regulation as Charleston's Elliott Cole sank 39 points in an 85-77 upset Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 59-43 six minutes into the second half, Cole led the Golden Eagles (11-9/5-9 Mountain East Conference) on an 18-2 run with 12-straight points to start the spurt for a 63-61 contest. After a Cardinals' Jarin Hilson trey, Charleston rattled off nine more points in a row for a 70-66 advantage. No. 9 WJU (17-3/11-3 MEC) tied the game at 77 and missed a pair of foul shots for another potential tie with 31 seconds left.

"We struggled tonight. Charleston did a good job slowing U.S. Down. We need to be ready to play for 40 min. We have to do a better job moving forward," said WJU head coach Danny Sancomb.

The Cardinals loss was their first in regulation after they fell in overtime and double overtime in the other two.

The Golden Eagles were unable to be stopped in the second half as they made 16 of 26 (61.5-percent) from the field and 5 of 10 from beyond the arc.

Cole was the top performer in both halves. After putting up 16 first-half points, the senior added 23 points in the second 20 minutes and finished 13 of 26 for the game and 7 of 15 from 3-point range.

Pat Moseh paced the WJU effort with 17 points and three assists. Haywood Highsmith contributed 14 points and nine rebounds, while Dominique Tham banked in 12 points, five rebounds and three helpers.

Both Chase Lawson and Preston Boswell connected for 11 points apiece.

WJU controlled the first half. The visitors went out to a 9-2 lead off a Highsmith jumper and built the difference to 24-9 on a Boswell 3-point play at 10:42. Charleston pulled back within four points, 34-30, before a strong WJU finish made it 42-32 at intermission.

The Cardinals lead continued to as many as 16 points twice, 56-40, and then the Hilson, who had six points, trey at 14:09 made it 59-43. Cole took over the next five minutes with his 12-straight points and the Charleston momentum last the final 13 minutes of play for the upset.

WJU has no time to relax as it goes east to play No. 2 Fairmont State Wednesday night, Feb. 1. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
