Weekend Preview: WJU Travels to Charleston

WHEELING, W.Va. – The Wheeling Jesuit women travel to Charleston for the second of the yearly meetings with the Golden Eagles. In the first matchup of the 2016-17 season, WJU prevailed in Wheeling, 53-47. In the early January meeting, Monica Burns led WJU with 16 points, two rebounds and four assists. Mariah Callen added 15 points, four rebounds and one assist.
 
The Cardinals come off a last second loss to the West Virginia State Yellow Jackets, 75-73. In its last five games, WJU holds a 3-2 mark. The Cardinals sit in a three-way tie atop the league standings at 10-3.
 
Sophomore guard Monica Burns leads the Cardinals with 15.5 points per contest, seventh best in the Mountain East Conference. Mariah Callen, who comes off a 23-point outing against the Yellow Jackets, chips in 13.7 points and a team-best 4.6 assists. Senior forward Jaana Motton leads the MEC in rebounding, averaging 9.8 per game. The Columbus, Ohio native has charted nine double-doubles in the last 12 games, and averages 13.1 points per contest. Motton is 24 points away from the 1,000 point career mark.
 
As a squad, the Cardinals are fourth in scoring offense (73 points per game) and second in scoring defense, allowing just 63.2 points on average. WJU ranks second in scoring margin at +9.8 points.
 
Jordyn Peck paces the Charleston offense with a league high 20.2 points per game. The Golden Eagle defense is fourth in the MEC, allowing 66.1 points.
 
Looking ahead, the WJU women travel to Fairmont State on Wednesday, February 1 for a 5:30 start.
