Cardinals Race Past Yellow Jackets

WHEELING, W. Va– The Wheeling Jesuit converted a comfortable lead into a race to a sound victory over visiting West Virginia State, 104-70, Thursday night in Mountain East Conference action.

The No. 9 Cardinals (17-2/11-2 MEC) made it two strong home performances in a row. A Chase Lawson trey followed by a Preston Boswell 3-pointer and completion of a four-point play ended the first half in a home flurry, before WJU put the game away on a 10-2 spurt six minutes in the second stanza over West Virginia State (6-13/3-10 MEC).

"It was a workmanlike effort as we were focused from the starters to the bench. We did a great job following our game plan and a good job rebounding," explained WJU head coach Danny Sancomb. "They (West Virginia State) made some good shots and executed well in the first six minutes, but we stayed the course and followed the game plan and I think we wore them down in the second half."

Pat Moseh continued his solid play with a game-high 20 points on 8 of 10 shooting to go with five rebounds and three assists.

Boswell totaled 17 points, including 8 of 8 from the foul line and Lawson downed four treys for a season-high 16 points.

Inside, Haywood Highsmith chipped in 15 points and six boards, while Kyle Ritz had his second double-double against the Yellow Jackets with 11 points and 10 caroms.

"We are not a one dimension team as we have guys who can step up and make plays (down our lineup) and are hard to guard," said Sancomb.

Off the bench, Jordan Fair posted a career-best eight points, while Dominique Tham added six points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Jarin Hilson dished out six assists without a turnover.

"Jarin Hilson did great pushing it up the floor for easy baskets and for him to have six assists to zero turnovers you cannot ask for more of a point guard. Between him and Preston, our two point guards had nine assists to one turnover tonight," pointed out the Cardinals coach.

Cody Morris hit for a West Virginia State best 13 points with a trio of 3-pointers.

WJU won the battle on the boards, 45-33, and committed only 10 turnovers to go with its 19 assists.

The Yellow Jackets held a four-point, 16-12, early lead in a fast-moving opening stretch. WJU took the lead for good on a Highsmith left-corner trey at 13:42 left in the first half. The Boswell four-point play with 1.2 seconds left catapulted the Cardinals to a 14-point, 49-35, halftime margin.

West Virginia State pulled to within eight points, 51-43, as it netted five of the first seven second-half points, but could get no closer. WJU enjoyed its largest difference of 34 points, 101-67, on Zach Collins layup through the lane with 45 ticks left.

WJU travels to the state capital for a meeting with the University of Charleston Saturday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m.
