Cardinals Fall to Yellow Jackets in Late Seconds

WHEELING, W.Va. – West Virginia State entered the McDonough Center Thursday evening, looking to knock off the top-ranked squad in the Mountain East Conference. The Yellow Jackets collected an offensive board on the teams last possession, leading to a game-winning field goal.  The visitors would outlast the Cardinals, 75-73.

Chelsea Richardson netted the game's first bucket, a backdoor layup on a pass from Jaana Motton. Richardson found an open point on the court on the next trip, knocking in a jumper from the elbow.

Motton sent the Cardinals ahead, 10-9, with 3:06 in the first before Mariah Callen buried an open look from behind the three-point line, stretching the hosts lead to four points, 13-9. Monica Burns added a pair of free throws late in the period, and WJU led, 17-11. West Virginia State would add a jumper in the remaining seconds, shrinking the WJU lead to four, 17-13.

The second period saw neither team lead by more than three points, but the Cardinals would maintain the upper hand, clinging to a two-point halftime lead.

The Yellow Jackets stretched their lead to five points (46-41) with 4:44 in the third, the largest margin of the contest since early in the first quarter.  On the next three Cardinal possessions, Callen would score nine points.

On the first two of the three consecutive trips, Callen knocked down long distance shots. The junior point guard would convert on a fast break and-one layup, capping the nine-point streak over the one minute and 34 second timeframe.

West Virginia State finished the third on an 8-2 run and would take a 59-54 lead into the final period of play.

Burns made another trip to the free throw line (7:29), knocking down both attempts to pull the Cardinals to within two points, 61-59.

Motton gave the Cardinals a surge when they needed it most. The Yellow Jackets briefly pulled ahead by a six-point margin, but Motton would grab an offensive board and convert a layup. On the following West Virginia State possession, Motton forced a turnover and was off to the races for a fast break layup, helping the Cardinals to within a bucket, 65-63.

Callen knocked down yet another trey, pushing WJU back ahead, 66-65. Mariah followed the bucket up with a pair of free throws on the next trip down the court, growing the hosts lead to three, 68-65.

West Virginia state drilled a dagger three with a minute remaining, but Callen had an answer just 31 seconds later, tying the contest at 73 all. On the visitors last trip down the court, Sydney Bates hauled in an offensive board and converted a put back, clinching a 75-73 victory.

Callen paced WJU with 23 points, four boards and five assists. Motton added another double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds. Burns finished with 10 points and five boards.
