Cardinals Rout Blue Knights, Collect 15th Win

WHEELING, W.Va. – Saturday afternoon marked the Wheeling Jesuit women's basketball teams seventh win against the Urbana Blue Knights since the merging of the Mountain East Conference in 2013. The Cardinals held Urbana to 65 points in an 88-65 routing of the Blue Knights, a contest in which the visitors never led.

"We had a very good practice yesterday and came into today with energy and focus," Cardinal head coach Debbie Buff remarked. "We spoke about being resilient after our last game and refocusing. Our conference is very tough and we need to play 40 minutes every game. Our leadership has been great, and we shared the ball tremendously. We're very proud to be 15-3 on the year."

The Cardinals buried four long distance shots in the opening three and a half minutes of play, flying to an early 14-4 lead. WJU continued its offensive rush, stretching its lead to 21 points, 25-4.

Senior forward Lydia Hyburg converted the last four points of the opening period, solidifying the Cardinals 21-point margin, 32-11.

With 1:59 remaining in the first half, Hyburg added another layup, propelling the Cardinals to their largest first-half advantage, 26 points.

Kylie Frizell, who finished the contest with a season-high 19 points on 8-13 shooting, knocked in a jumper with 5:34 remaining in the third, capping a brief 7-0 Cardinal run and extending the hosts lead to 29 points, 58-29.

At the 6:15 mark in the fourth, Urbana had trimmed the Cardinal lead to 20, but WJU would extend the margin to a game-high 31 points over the next four minutes, clinching its 10th conference victory of the season.

Monica Burns shot only eight times on her way to charting a game best 20 points. Burns converted all seven of her free throws while handing out two assists.

Frizell chipped in 19 points and five rebounds to go along with Jaana Motton's monster double-double, 18 points and a season high 16 rebounds.

Mariah Callen added seven points and five assists while Lydia Hyburg scored eight tallies. Lauren Lipscomb and Chelsea Richardson both added four points and Taliah Cashwell scored three.

WJU hosts West Virginia State at Thursday night at 5:30 in the McDonough Center.
