Cards Fall at Hilltoppers, 79-72

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Thursday night marked the first of two regular season meetings between Ohio valley rivals, Wheeling Jesuit and West Liberty. The Cardinals traveled to challenge the Hilltoppers in the ASRC, on the campus of West Liberty. West Liberty (6-11, 5-6 MEC) would outlast the Cardinals (14-3, 9-2 MEC), 79-72.
 
The Cardinals and 'Toppers exchanged baskets throughout a tightly-contested first quarter. Neither squad would lead by more than three points in the opening 10 minutes, but the Cardinals would use a Lydia Hyburg jumper to take a two-point lead into the second period.
 
Taliah Cashwell buried her first shot of the game to begin the second period, helping WJU to a 19-15 lead. With 7:22 in the second, Hyburg would add another hoop, propelling the Cards ahead, 26-20.
 
West Liberty would rattle off 19 of the next 23 points, taking a 39-30 advantage with 49 seconds remaining and later a 42-32 margin into the half.
 
Hyburg and Monica Burns paced the WJU first-half scoring with eight points apiece. Jaana Motton and Chelsea Richardson each scored six points in the first half.
 
The Cardinals came out of the locker room firing on all cylinders, converting on their first seven possessions of the second half, rattling off a 17-10 run. At the 4:24 media, the Hilltopper lead was down to three, 52-49.
 
Burns converted an and-one bucket with 1:43 on the clock, pulling WJU to within a basket, 58-56. On the club's last possession of the period, Mariah Callen would make one of two from the free-throw line, and the fourth quarter 'Topper lead would be five, 62-57.
 
Motton began the fourth quarter with two buckets, and with 8:29 on the clock, WJU trailed by a single tally, 62-61. West Liberty added the next eight points, stretching its lead back to nine, 70-61.
 
Callen would knock down a long-distance trey with 3:38 remaining, helping WJU to within six points of the Hilltoppers. McKenna Shives would knock in two of her game-high 28 points at the 2:40 mark, extending the West Liberty lead to eight, 76-68.
 
West Liberty would go on to outlast the Cardinals, 79-72.
 
Burns would lead WJU with her 19 points and four rebounds. Motton charted yet another double-double, 16 points and 10 boards. Hyburg and Callen completed the Cardinals double-figure scorers with 12 and 10, respectively.
 
Richardson finished with seven points while Kylie Frizell chipped in five and Cashwell three.
 
The Cardinals return home Saturday, January 21 to host Urbana University in a 2 p.m. contest.
