Cardinals Hold Pioneers to Season Low, Remain Atop MEC

Wheeling Intelligencer Story
WHEELING, W.Va. – In Tuesday's battle of two top-ranked Mountain East Conference teams, the Wheeling Jesuit Cardinals held the visiting Glenville State Pioneers to a season low in points, 66, en route to a 79-66 victory.

The Cardinals (12-2, 7-1 MEC) held the Pioneers (12-2, 6-2 MEC) to just 23 first-half points to take a 34-23 advantage. WJU would extend its lead to 16, 54-38, after the third period before outlasting Glenville, 79-66.

"Our team stayed disciplined and poised while following our game plan for the 40 minutes," Cardinals head coach Debbie Buff stressed. "Glenville is the top scoring team in the nation, averaging over 100 points per game. I am so proud of the individual efforts from everyone starting in practice and carrying over into the game. We committed to the game plan and had outstanding energy and focus. Our staff is extremely happy and proud of our entire team."

The Cardinals began the contest with a 9-0 run, forcing a Pioneers timeout. Jaana Motton, who scored a game-best 22 points, chipped in four of the first nine WJU points. Motton would add the last bucket of the first period, stretching the hosts lead to 11, 19-8.

WJU's largest lead of the opening half came with 6:36 remaining in the second quarter when a Chenelle Moore layup sent the Cardinals ahead, 27-10. Glenville pulled to within eight points late in the half, but Mariah Callen buried a trey as time expired, helping the Cardinals to an 11-point halftime lead.

With 7:25 in the third, the WJU lead was only seven, but the Cardinals had an answer. Callen added another three followed by a Monica Burns fast break, growing the Cardinal lead back to 12. Burns would later add a pair of free-throws late in the third, and WJU led, 54-38.

In the fourth quarter, Burns added two more of her nine total free-throws to open the largest lead of the evening, 22 points. The visitors would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way, as WJU would remain atop the MEC with a 79-66 victory.

Motton added her third consecutive double-double, 22 points and 10 rebounds. Burns also crossed the 20-point plateau while assisting on four buckets and collecting five rebounds.

"Jaana was huge, and she has been stepping up in practice and really leading the team," Buff added.

Callen added 15 points and five assists, and Kylie Frizell finished 2-2 for eight points. Chelsea Richardson and Chenelle Moore each supplied the Cardinals with six points. Richardson grabbed four boards while Moore collected seven caroms.

The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, January 14 when they host Concord University at 1 p.m.
