Cardinals Cruise Past Mountain Cats in Saturday’s MEC Action

WHEELING, W.Va. – The opening five minutes of Saturday afternoon's Mountain East Conference matchup would dictate the outcome. The Wheeling Jesuit women, guided by a trio of treys, would begin the contest with a 19-2 rush, forcing a Concord timeout.

The Cardinals (13-2, 8-1 MEC) would grow their lead beyond 20 points at multiple occasions in the first half, and led by 21, 54-33, at the intermission.

WJU outscored the visiting Mountain Cats, 38-28, in the second half, clinching their 8th conference victory.

"Our energy throughout the entire 40 minutes was outstanding," WJU head coach Debbie Buff stated. "Our defensive intensity has picked up our last three games. It was an all-around great team victory."

Monica Burns and Mariah Callen combined for 25 of the 54 Cardinal points, including three made three-pointers.

Nearly three and a half minutes into the third quarter, Concord cut the hosts lead to 17, but WJU would respond. The Cardinals would end the quarter on a 10-4 run, taking a 26-point advantage into the fourth period.

WJU would lead by no less than 21 for the duration of the final period. The Cardinals largest lead came with just under two minutes when senior Lydia Hyburg netted a jumper, sending WJU ahead 90-57. The Cardinals went on to win, 92-61.

Callen led all WJU scorers with 19 points on 6-10 shooting. The junior point guard dished out five assists and swiped two steals in 30 minutes of action.

Jaana Motton charted her fourth-straight double double, 18 points and 11 rebounds. Burns added 16 points on 4-6 shooting while Kylie Frizell added 10 points and an assist.

Hyburg supplied 12 points off the bench. Chelsea Richardson finished with eight points while Taliah Cashwell added three. Khira Burton and Deja Dabney each scored a bucket.

"I thought we shared the ball excellent, as we finished with five players in double figures. As a team, we outrebounded Concord 37-18 and I'm proud of our all-around effort," Buff added.

WJU continues its home stretch to host Virginia Wise at 4 p.m. on Monday, January 16.
