Early Rock Second-Half Goal Difference Against Cards

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – A Slippery Rock shot found the net 1:37 into the second half and it spelled the men's soccer match difference Saturday afternoon. With the goal, Slippery Rock held on against some late Wheeling Jesuit shots on goal for the 2-1 win.

Owain Hawkins' boot in the 88th-minute was saved by The Rock (2-4-1) keeper and third Cardinals (4-4) late second-half attempt to be turned away.

"We gave up two goals in the first two minutes of each half," said WJU coach James Regan. "Our lack of concentration at key times is costing us games.  Defensively, we need to get better as a group if we are going to compete for a playoff spot."

Less than two minutes into the afternoon match, Jacob Thiel put the home team on the scoreboard.

The Cardinals tied the match, 1-1, at 36:38 when Brent Pedlow took a Teavon Spencer pass from the right side and put it into the back of the net.

After being outshot 8-4 in the first 45 minutes, WJU evened the attempts in the second half. Goalie Tyler Shotwell saved five shots.

WJU's road gets no easier. The Cardinals travel to face the No. 1 Golden Eagles of Charleston in a 7 p.m. Wednesday night, Sept. 28, contest.
