No. 5 Charleston Controls Second Half, Defeats WJU

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – After a solid first half, the Wheeling Jesuit men's soccer team was unable to equal the results as No. 5 Charleston took control for a 5-1 Mountain East Conference victory.

Trailing 1-0, the Cardinals (4-5/2-3 MEC) tied the match when Brent Pedlow put the ball into the back of the net at 33:38. Patrick Guier helped the Golden Eagles (8-1/4-1 MEC) retake the lead with 1:02 left before the half. Charleston controlled the second 45 minutes for a trio of goals and 5-1 final.

"We played a great first half tactically where we absorbed the pressure and hit them on the break," said James Regan, WJU coach. "Unfortunately, we gave up the second goal with two minutes left in the first half. We just lack the same discipline in the second half and gave them the opportunity to put the game out of reach."

WJU was able to increase its shots from one to six in the second half, but Charleston finished with an 18-7 match edge.

Aitor Iniguez de Heredia booted two shots on goal and three overall, while Matt Vogt accounted for the final shot on goal.

Cardinals goalie Matt McCormick posted four saves.

Bruno Oliviera led Charleston with the match's first and third goals.

WJU stays on the road for a Saturday, Oct. 1, MEC match at Urbana. Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.
