Cardinals Handle Bonnies

WHEELING, W.Va. – A big Homecoming victory was experienced on Bishop Schmitt Field Saturday. The Wheeling Jesuit men's rugby team handled St. Bonaventure by a 62-15 final.

The Cardinals (3-1) dominated the scrum, winning 100-percent of them, and saw eight different players score tries in the going away victory. The WJU defense won four scrums of its own in the win.

"The team dominated in the line outs, winning all offensive lineouts and four other defensive lineouts," said Cardinals head coach Tommy Duffy. "We were able to control the pace the entire game, winning the majority of rucks."

WJU posted four tries in the opening half as Joji Valasiskala, Carter Landry, Frank Rolf and Allan Hanson accounted for them. The Cardinals added four more in the later half compliments of Alston Burton, Pete Malcolm, Cullen Buckley and Hugh McAllister.

"Scrum half Zach Stamanack quickened the pace of the game by pushing the ball into the hands of Allan Hanson, who commanded the back line for positive gains all match long. We had a great balance with the back line from crashes and getting the ball wide, which kept the Bonnies on their heels.

WJU continues its fall season next Friday night. The Cardinals play the Gaels of Iona in a neutral site match on the campus of Penn State in University Park, Pa.
