Bobcats Scratch out 1-0 Win over Cardinals

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The second week of Mountain East Conference action did not get off on the right foot Thursday night. Wheeling Jesuit was unable to get its offense going as West Virginia Wesleyan scratched out the men's soccer match's lone goal 24 minutes in for a 1-0 victory.

The Bobcats (2-3/2-1 MEC) saw Luca Falconeri push a shot past the Cardinals' keeper amidst a cluster in front of the net at 24:07. The home goal came less than two minutes after WJU (3-2/2-1 MEC) had a good scoring chance by Anthony Tucker, whose shot was saved from the goal on the other end of the field.

"We came out flat in the first half and they took advantage of it," said WJU coach James Regan. "In the second half, we had a better response, but still lacked quality in final third."

West Virginia Wesleyan controlled the action for the majority of the match. The Bobcats held the advantage in shots, 23-8, and corner kicks, 10-1.

Tucker accounted for half of the Cardinals shots, four of eight, and half of the shots on goal, two of four, on the night. Will Rector and Matt Vogt put the other two WJU shots on goal.

Cardinals goalie Matt McCormick saved eight of the nine Bobcats' shots on goal.

"We have to rebound quickly and get back to the winning column on Saturday, and carry the momentum into next Wednesday's showdown with Notre Dame," added Regan.

WJU returns home for a 1 p.m. Saturday match against Pitt-Johnstown.
