Cardinals Receive Championship Hardware, Defeat ‘Toppers

WHEELING, W.Va. – For the first time in both University and Mountain East Conference history, the Wheeling Jesuit volleyball team received its National Championship hardware Tuesday night. After the prematch ceremony, the Cardinals dispatched of an improving Hilltoppers of West Liberty squad, 3-1.
 
The No. 6 Cardinals (7-2/1-0 MEC) came out firing with a 25-10 first set, before the Hilltoppers (7-3/0-1 MEC) edged out a 25-23 second set and tied the match. WJU reestablished itself from the rest of the night with 25-11 and 25-19 final sets for the win.

The 11 returning 2015 WJU team members were presented by Fr. Jim Fleming, WJU President, Kevin Forde, WJU Athletic Director and Reid Amos, MEC Commissioner, with their National Champions rings in a prematch ceremony. The 2015 National title was the first WJU and MEC Team Title.
 
On the court, freshman Breanna Kramer paced the Cardinals front line with 14 kills and 13 digs. Emma Schleucher pounded 11 kills and served a pair of aces.
 
Andrea Thobe dished out 52 assists, dug 12 attacks and dinked four kills. Sam Obringer added 16 digs on defense.
 
WJU outhit West Liberty, .300 to .101 in the four sets.
 
The Cardinals ran out to a commanding 12-4 first set lead. West Liberty failed to cut the difference to less than 10 points twice, before WJU finished the set 25-10.
 
The Hilltoppers led by as many as three points twice, 9-6 and 12-9, in the second set. The Cards came back to take the lead, 16-14 and 23-22, but could not hold the advantage and dropped the set, 23-25.
 
WJU quickly took control of set three and won 25-11. In the fourth set tied at 8-8, WJU went on an 8-1 run and ended the match, 25-19.
 
WJU opens a full slate of weekend matches Friday morning. The Cardinals host the two-day WJU Invitational where they entertain four Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference teams starting with Mercyhurst and Slippery Rock at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
