Cardinals Homer Twice, Blank Pioneers

WHEELING, W.Va. – Kelsi Thompson and Morgan Stohlman both homered and the Cardinals pitchers did the rest as Wheeling Jesuit blanked Glenville State on both ends of the softball doubleheader, 8-0 in five innings and 1-0, Friday.

The Cardinals (25-11/13-3 Mountain East Conference North) struck early and often in the opener as Ali Smith had a two-run double, before Thompson connected for her second grand slam of the year and Stohlman added her own two-run shot. A Victoria Scott RBI double in the third inning gave WJU all the offense, it needed in the late contest against Glenville State (10-29/5-15 MEC South).

Along with the three big first game hits, the WJU pitchers – Mallory Chapman, Erin Unterbrink and Kori Locke – combined to give up only six hits and struck out 15 batters. Chapman (13-5) covered four innings with six strikeouts and won her eighth-straight decision. Unterbrink (6-3) worked the first-four game-two frames, while Locke finished both contests, picked up her second save and fanned six in four innings of work.

"I really enjoyed the way we came out and were ready to play. We had quality at bats and it showed," said Cardinals coach Kelli Williams

With the two victories, the Cardinals have now won 15 of their last 16 contests.

WJU has a day off before it hosts nationally-ranked West Virginia Wesleyan in a 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon twinbill.

Game 1

In the home first, Scott walked, moved up on a Thompson hit over third base. Both Cards runners raced home on a long Smith double for a 2-0 lead.

After Chapman struck out the side in the top of the second, the WJU hitters put together its biggest run output. Following a Stohlman hit, Molly Welsh walk and Cassie Holstein infield hit with two outs, Thompson belted her second grand slam of the season to make it 6-0.
Rachel Conrad led off the WJU third with a double and Stohlman drove the ball deep over the left field fence two batters later for another pair of runs.

Locke struck out the side in the top of the seventh to end the contest.

Game 2

After 2.5 scoreless innings, Scott doubled home Marissa Cangelosi, who lofted a leadoff single, for what would be the game's lone score.

Unterbrink and Locke held the Pioneers off the scoreboard the rest of the way and completed the sweep.
