Cardinals Continue Solid Play, Sweep ‘Toppers

WTOV Video Highlights
WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. –
It was a sunny Cardinals softball day on the hill. Wheeling Jesuit continued its sold play with its sixth doubleheader sweep in seven dates with 3-2 and 9-1 victories at West Liberty Tuesday afternoon.

The Cardinals (23-11/11-3 Mountain East North) received a pair of RBI Marissa Cangelosi hits for enough to defeat the Hilltoppers (9-31/2-16 MEC North) in the opener. WJU broke out a 16-hit attack and plated nine runs for a going away late victory.

"I'm happy we took care of business and got two wins today. West Liberty did a good job keeping us off balance as our hitters in the first game and we didn't do a good job of adjusting," said Kelli Williams, WJU head coach. "The second game we came ready to go and it showed. Good team wins today."

WJU has now won 13 of its last 14 games with only a one-run decision as the lone loss.

Cassie Holstein lined 5 hits

Ali Smith doubles in game 2's 1st inning

Leadoff hitter Cassie Holstein slapped five hits of the WJU's 25. The right fielder scored three times, drove home two and swiped two bases.

Marissa Cangelosi lined two singles in each game and knocked in a pair of runners.

Kelsi Thompson belted two RBI doubles and Ali Smith added one of her own.

Mikaela Miller, Molly Welsh and Morgan Stohlman contributed a pair of hits each.

In the circle, Mallory Chapman (12-5) won her seventh-straight decision. She scattered six hits and two runs with four strikeouts.

Freshman Erin Unterbrink improved to 4-3 with four scoreless game two innings of three-hit work.

WJU is now off until it hosts Glenville State Saturday afternoon, April 9, at 1 p.m.

Game 1

Rachel Conrad reached base in both the second and sixth frames and Cangelosi brought her home. In the second, Conrad singled to right field, before Cangelosi had the run-scoring hit. Conrad was hit by sixth-inning pitch and Cangelosi drove the ball through the right side for a 2-0 WJU lead.

Leading 2-1 in the seventh, Holstein singled and ran around the bases on a Thompson double. The run would be needed as West Liberty pushed one run across the plate, but Chapman allowed no more for the 3-2 win.

Game 2

Holstein was a true catalyst in game two. The quick lefty went 4 for 4 with two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases. She singled leading off both the first and third and scored on a Smith double first and Thompson's third-inning two-bagger for a 2-0 score.

In the fourth, Holstein and Welsh each drove in one run and doubled the Cardinals advantage to 4-0. The pair of outfielders repeated the feat the next inning along with a two-run hit by Miller and double the lead again to 8-0.

Emily Garvin capped the WJU scoring with a RBI hit in the seventh and eventual 9-1 final.
