WJU Bats Come Alive in Game Two, Help Earn Split with Golden Eagles

WHEELING, W.Va. – After dropping the first of two games on Sunday with the University of Charleston, the Wheeling Jesuit baseball team scored five runs in the second inning and six runs in the fifth inning of game two to split the doubleheader.  The Cardinals (7-17/6-6 MEC) dropped game one, 6-2, to the Golden Eagles (8-19/4-8 MEC) before claiming game two, 11-1.

Joe San Felippo took the mound for WJU in game one. The junior lasted six innings and was charged with three earned runs. He struck out four hitters while walking one. Cody Hudson threw the final inning, allowing one run.

Logan Schickler went a perfect 3-3 at the plate for WJU and scored both of the Cardinals runs in the first game. Jagger Bruck recorded two hits and Brock McGivern finished with a single.

Logan Hudson picked up his first victory of the season in game two. The senior lasted five innings, allowing zero earned runs and striking out three.  Justin Fritts relieved Hudson and would chart the last six outs, striking out four opponents.

Christopher Brake led WJU with three RBI's and two hits in game two. He also scored two runs. Dillon Sunnafrank notched two hits, scored two runs, and drove in one run. Connacher tallied two RBI's, two runs scored, and one base hit. McGivern added two RBI's and a base hit. Gaydos drove in one run and scored twice in game two for WJU.

The Cardinals return to action on Tuesday, April 5 when they travel to Alderson Broaddus for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Game 1:

Charleston took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of play before WJU answered in the second inning. Bruck singled to short and Schickler advanced home on a fielding error by the Golden Eagles.

UC added three runs in the fourth inning and led 4-1. The Golden Eagles added two more runs, one in the sixth and one in the seventh, to take a 6-1 lead.

Schickler crossed home plate on a wild pitch in the seventh inning, but the Cardinals would fall, 6-2.

Game 2:

Charleston managed to take another 1-0 lead before WJU scored the next 11 runs.

In the bottom of the second inning, Gaydos drove in Sunnafrank on a single to leftfield. Two batters later, Brake doubled down the line, scoring Connacher and Gaydos. Schickler reached on an error, and Adam Dennison and Brake scored. WJU would lead 5-1 after two innings.

The Cardinals scored six runs in the fifth inning to take an 11-1 lead. Schickler, San Felippo, and Sunnafrank recorded back-to-back-to-back doubles before Connacher singled to right field, and the Cardinals led, 8-1. Brake singled through the left side of the infield, scoring Connacher, giving WJU a 9-1 lead. McGivern brought home Gaydos and Brake on a two-RBI base hit to left field, and WJU took its 11-1 advantage.
