Chapman Shutout and Timely Hits Helps WJU Take Pair from Notre Dame College

WHEELING, W.Va. – Mallory Chapman threw her fifth shutout and timely Wheeling Jesuit softball hitting helped take a Sunday pair from Notre Dame College in the regular season finale.

Chapman worked out of trouble and scattered six hits for her fifth shutout in the opener, 2-0, over the Falcons (15-34/9-23 Mountain East Conference North). The Cardinals (34-18/22-10 MEC North) pushed across two second-game manufactured runs and Kori Locke fanned nine hitters in a 2-1 victory.

Chapman (17-9) and Locke (11-5) held the Notre Dame offense to a single earned run over 17 innings and struck out 13 hitters. Chapman also produced a game-two lead-off pinch hit single from what resulted in eventual game-winning score.

Cassie Holstein drove a run-scoring triple to the right field fence, added three singles and scored a run for WJU at the plate.

Kelsi Thompson lined three singles, scored a run and drove in another. Jackie Cramer, Dana Achille and Molly Welsh finished with one hit apiece.

The Cardinals will now be off until they take part in the eight-team MEC Tournament at the Botetourt Sports Complext in Troutville, Va. The three-day event begins Friday, April 29. WJU will be the No. 2 North Division seed and face No. 3 South Division seed Concord at noon.

Game 1

In the home third inning, Welsh reached on a fielder's choice. With two outs, Holstein followed and drove the ball where it one-hopped to the right field fence for a RBI triple and 1-0 score.

Thompson led off the bottom of the sixth with a single up the middle. WJU added the insurance run when Thompson raced home with two outs on an Achille single to left field.

Chapman completed her fifth shutout in the top of the seventh.

Cassie Holstein slides with the game-two tying run

The Falcons started with their lone run of the day in the top of the first inning.

In the bottom of the third, Holstein led off with a single past the short stop and moved to second on a wild pitch. Marissa Cangelosi sacrificed her to third, before Holstein raced home and beat the throw on a Thompson squeeze bunt to tie it, 1-1.

For its next at bat, WJU saw Chapman belt a hard pinch hit liner. Achille reentered and was sacrified by Rachel Conrad. After the second out, Welsh blistered a hard run-scoring single past the Notre Dame first baseman and 2-1 score.

Locke did not need any more WJU runs. The freshman struck out seven and allowed only four hits over the final six Notre Dame at bats.
